How do I make a Peebles garage pay from commuters and Glentress visitors?

Carlton Scott | Scottish Borders Business | 27 October 2026

By selling convenience at a rate that covers it. Peebles has Edinburgh commuters who need the car back the same evening, and Tweed Valley visitors whose weekend ends with a warning light. Both pay for a garage that fits around them. Early drop-off and a Saturday slot kept open, at a rate set for the postcode, turn both into profitable work: the UK independent average is £75.87 an hour, and most workshops need nearer £112.

The town can afford it. Peebles is 23 miles from Edinburgh, with a large commuting population and a comfortable retired one. Glentress and the Tweed Valley trails bring visitors year round, and the High Street has long been rated among Scotland’s best for independent shops. Rents here are priced for that postcode. A garage charging Hawick rates in Peebles is carrying the higher costs without the higher income, and that’s the most common thing we find in the town.

How much should my independent garage charge per hour in 2026?

More than most do. GarageMax’s April 2026 labour rate check puts the UK independent average at £75.87 an hour and the cost-based rate most small workshops actually need nearer £112, and it calls the gap between them the fear tax. Work yours out from your own costs: technician wages and on-costs, the bay, the ramp and the diagnostic equipment, insurance, and the hours you sell in a week, not the forty on the clock. Then set the rate to that figure and stop apologising for it, because every hour sold below cost is sold at a loss no volume will fix.

Is EV training worth it, and what does it really cost?

Yes, if electric and hybrid cars are already coming through the door. The bigger cost is the time away from the workshop: around £1,000 a day of lost output while a technician trains, on the trade’s own estimate. On top of that come the fees, IMI registration and accommodation for a three-day Level 4 course. Count the EVs and hybrids you turned away last quarter before deciding. In a commuter town like Peebles the garage that can take the work sets the price for it.

In Borders garages, we usually see a full diary, with the hours sold a long way short of the hours paid for. The gap is in jobs quoted from memory and parts marked up by habit, with MOTs treated as a favour on top. Closing it makes you more than any extra customer would.

What is a typical net profit margin for a UK garage?

Between 7% and 20%, with smaller workshops usually at 7% to 12%, on Bsness’s April 2026 report on UK garage earnings. Where a garage sits in that range comes down to three numbers: the labour rate, how many of the hours paid for are actually sold, and the margin taken on parts. Garages that check those three every week can price with confidence. The ones that don’t tend to end up with a full workshop and an empty bank account, and that’s how most owners describe things when they first call us.

MOT bookings are dropping off, what should I do?

Check whether it’s the market or your reminders before you cut the price. Garages were urged to re-evaluate as volumes slowed, but most drops in a small workshop’s numbers come from reminders that stopped going out or a booking page nobody can find, or from a rival’s discount you shouldn’t match. Text every customer a month before the test is due and keep the price at the cap. Then sell the service alongside it. MOT volume is the cheapest marketing a garage has.

How much does a business coach cost in the Scottish Borders?

Between £500 and £3,500 a month plus VAT for one-to-one coaching, depending on the coach’s experience, according to Alan Wick’s May 2026 guide to UK coaching fees. The bill runs for as long as the coaching does. The price of any advice comes down to how much of the work the adviser does for you: coaching talks you through it, and a fixed-fee diagnose-and-fix piece of work goes through the numbers with you and makes the changes. The Profit Clarity Framework is the second kind: a fixed £1,495 + VAT for 30 days on your workshop’s real numbers, with nothing to pay after that.

In Peebles the first change is nearly always the labour rate, because the town has been able to pay more than the workshop has been asking for some years.

Where can a Peebles garage owner get help with the numbers?

Carlton Scott’s Profit Clarity Framework™ is a 30-day diagnose-and-fix process on your real numbers at the fixed fee above. It’s built for owners who are under a car most of the day, and it leaves you with a more profitable garage. We’ve set out how it works for the town’s garages on our Peebles garage page, including how little of your time it takes and what we’d need to start. There’s also an overview of the framework for garages. For the same numbers at work in a commuter town, read our Galashiels café article, and for a business across the street, our Peebles takeaway article. Most clients who commit to the framework and follow our recommendations see a full return on the fee within 90 days.
