Can a Galashiels garage make money from Borders Railway commuters?

Carlton Scott | Scottish Borders Business | September 2026

Yes, if the offer fits the timetable rather than the workshop’s habits. Transport Scotland found 39% of Borders Railway users travelling for a day trip or an overnight stay, and passenger numbers far above forecast. A commuter who drops the car at the station at seven and collects it after six needs no courtesy car and no day off, and most garages give that convenience away by opening at eight.

Galashiels has more of this than the other Borders towns. Borders College’s Galashiels campus and Heriot-Watt’s textiles school bring staff and students into the centre all week, the Great Tapestry of Scotland put Tweedbank on the visitor map, and the station’s footfall rose 19% in a year. It is the closest thing the Borders has to a commuter town, and commuter towns run on predictable hours that a workshop can plan around.

How much should my independent garage charge per hour in 2026?

More than most do. GarageMax’s April 2026 labour rate check puts the UK independent average at £75.87 an hour and the cost-based rate most small workshops actually need nearer £112, and it calls the gap between them the fear tax. Work yours out from your own costs: technician wages and on-costs, the bay, the ramp and the diagnostic equipment, insurance, and the hours you genuinely sell in a week rather than the forty on the clock. Then set the rate to that figure and stop apologising for it, because every hour sold below cost is sold at a loss no volume will fix.

What labour efficiency should my workshop be hitting?

Above 85% if it is running well, and most UK garages sit at 60% to 70% without knowing it, on WorkshopEase’s June 2026 guide. Efficiency is sold hours against hours paid for, so a technician paid for forty who bills twenty-six is running at 65%. Measure it weekly per technician, then find where the hours go: waiting on parts, diagnosis nobody charges for, jobs quoted short. Ten points of efficiency is worth more to a small garage than any price rise.

What we see in Borders garages is that the diary is full and the hours sold are a long way short of the hours paid for. The gap sits in jobs quoted from memory, parts marked up by habit and MOTs treated as a favour, and closing it is worth more than any extra customer.

What is a typical net profit margin for a UK garage?

Between 7% and 20%, with smaller workshops usually at 7% to 12%, on Bsness’s April 2026 report on UK garage earnings. Where a garage sits in that range is settled by three numbers rather than by how full the diary looks: the labour rate, how many of the hours paid for are actually sold, and the margin taken on parts. Garages that read those three every week price with confidence. Garages that do not tend to carry a full workshop and an empty bank account, which is the position most owners describe when they first call us.

Should I take on an apprentice, and what does it really cost?

Yes, if you can give a technician’s time to it, and cost it honestly: the apprentice wage, the day-release hours, a mentor’s lost billable time in the first year, and the tools. Most small garages struggle to take one on, yet a technician who grew up in your workshop is the only answer to the recruitment problem that does not involve poaching. Sell the hours they free up at a proper rate and the arithmetic works from year two.

How much does a business coach cost in the Scottish Borders?

Between £500 and £3,500 a month plus VAT for one-to-one coaching, depending on the coach’s experience, according to Alan Wick’s May 2026 guide to UK coaching fees, and the bill runs for as long as the coaching does. What moves the price of any advice is how much of the work the adviser does for you: coaching talks you through it, and a fixed-fee diagnose-and-fix piece of work goes through the numbers with you and makes the changes. The Profit Clarity Framework is the second kind: a fixed £1,495 + VAT for 30 days on your workshop’s real numbers, and nothing after that.

In Galashiels the first change is usually the opening hours, because the trade the railway brings is only reachable at the two ends of the day.

Where can a Galashiels garage owner get help with the numbers?

That’s exactly what the Profit Clarity Framework™ does: a 30-day diagnose-and-fix process on your real numbers at the fixed fee above, built for owners who are under a car most of the day, and it leaves you with a more profitable garage. We’ve set out how it works for the town’s garages on our Galashiels garage page, including how little of your time it takes and what we’d need to start. There’s also an overview of the framework for garages, and the same numbers at work in a commuter town in our Galashiels café article, and the same numbers across the street in our Galashiels takeaway article. Most clients who commit to the framework and follow our recommendations see a full return on the fee within 90 days.
